Giving birth to a baby in Dubai

Jul 15, 2014 by Sylva Simpson

Congrats!!! Its time to welcome a new member to your family. You will be concerned about what all things are to be taken into consideration when giving birth in Dubai

Choosing the hospital

First thing to do is to check with your insurance company whether maternity cost is covered with it. If so,just make it clear whether they cover the whole amount or it is limited.

If you don't have an insurance coverage, then it is better to get a Dubai Heath Card. With that you can utilize the facilities of government hospitals at cheaper rate i.e for normal delivery around AED 5000 and c-section around AED 8000.

If you choose Latifa(Al Wasl) hospital or Dubai hospital you will have to get your routine checkup done at local clinic. You can find your local clinic at www.dha.gov.ae.

If you don't want to go to government hospital, you can choose a private hospital but they are lot more expensive and can charge up to AED 10,000 to AED 20,000.Some hospitals even offer packages that include regular scans, doctor checkups, exercise advice, diet plan,so that you can purchase the one that suits you.

You can find a list of government and private hospitals at http://www.government.ae/en/web/guest/important-contact-numbers

Registering the mom-to-be for delivery

To register, you will need to submit the following documents at the hospitals

  • marriage,

  • valid UAE visa,

  • and your residence in the UAE, like electricity bill or rent contract.

After the delivery

Finally, the moment has arrived. The new bundle of joy has arrived. An official notification of the baby's birth in Arabic will be given from the hospital. You can request for a notification in English. This notification will get you the child's birth certificate.

Before applying for passport and residence visa, the parents should attest the English and Arabic birth certificate from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Health. You have to register your child's birth within 30 days of birth and must apply for passport and visa within 120 days from date of birth. Otherwise a fine of Dhs 100 will be charged.

Abortion is illegal and it is compulsory that both parents should get legally married to give birth to their child in UAE.
