How to behave in Dubai with the locals – what do I do, what do I say?
Dubai is one of the fashionable luxury destinations. Who has not been there already, dreams of visiting this city in the near future. Dubai and the UAE is still a distant culture because we have not had direct contact with that world, its customs, and traditions.
Dubai is one of the safest cities in the world, especially for tourists and the women are very careful of visitors. In return, it only asks that the visitors respect their customs.
What should I wear?
You can dress as you wish as long as they are not excessively revealing. The people are more open minded than you think about their way of being and dressing.
Women can wear sleeveless tops, bustier, miniskirts and high heels, shirts, and anything you feel comfortable with. Decorum there is the same as here: do not pass the line of what is socially acceptable as in your home. The exception is being topless in beaches and pools unless it is very private. Wearing a scarf when you are in mosque is a good practice. It is advised not to wear tight-fitting or transparent outfits in public. As for men, it is similar to the Western governing rules.
What do I do?
In Dubai, the best you can do is enjoying every minute of a country that makes you feel like a king or queen all the time. When you’ve gotten used to the traditional dress of local men and women, you will no longer feel the cultural barrier and when you talk to them, you will be surprised by their slow, velvety and gentle voice. They have a lot of charm! If they do not speak English, they speak French or two foreign languages at once.
You can ask whatever you want but unaddressed: their pace is slower than ours. It is best to avoid starting a conversation with women, especially for women.
When you are related to someone or you go to greet the local acquaintances, you must submit your hand to shake. Do not give two kisses on the cheeks unless you know that they also greet the same way. Public display of affection among couples (whether you are married or not) can often end up in legal trouble.
Maybe you wish to chill out – drinking is fine as long as you are in your home and have obtained a license for it. Never even dream to drink in public as it could land you in trouble. If an idea hits your head to take the photo of local people (especially women) in their ethnic dress – give it a strict no.
Some medicines containing psychotropic ingredients are prohibited in Dubai. Visitors need to confirm that their medicines are permitted in Dubai before entering the country.
Dubai is a paradise and have lots to offer for tourists as long as you obey their traditions and customs.
