The UAE Water Aid Project (UAE Suqia) was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai on Saturday,to provide clean water for five million people worldwide,crossed Dh60 million within first two days.
Emirates Airlines, Dubai Customs, DP World, Dewa, Jafza, Nakheel, Wasl Properties and Dubailand, each pledging Dh5million for the cause, are some of the top donors so far.
The first phase of the project will comprise digging wells in 10 countries within 15 days and it will be implemented by the Emirates Red Crescent. The countries included in the first phase are Pakistan, India, Niger, Somalia, Ghana, Sudan, Indonesia, Togo, and Iraq.
It is estimated that more than 3.4 million people die annually as a result of water related diseases. Shaikh Mohammad launched the project to help prevent such deaths.With the onset of Ramdan,the project also aims to involve Emiratis, expats, public and private organisations in humanitarian service during this holy month.
“The UAE’s approach is based on providing aid for all. The pivotal played by the UAE in the humanitarian field only reflects the key noble values of the UAE people,” said Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.
