Water and Electricity are two essential requirements for any household. While moving into a new house, it is all the more important to ensure that connections for water and electricity are easily available.
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is responsible for the supply of water and electricity throughout Dubai. DEWA is well known for its supply of safe potable water and for the safety measures adopted and followed while handling electricity. The procedure for application and being connected is very clearly specified by DEWA.The organization strives to achieve excellence in customer service and hence it is fairly easy to get a secure connection.
If the owner of the house you are renting has already obtained a Water and Electricity connection, you still need to submit an application and some other documents in the DEWA office to use the same connection. The application can be submitted in English or Arabic.

- Filled Application form –This can be obtained from the DEWA head office or one of the customer service offices.
- Consumer account number – the nine-digit number can be obtained from the owner or real estate agent. Sometimes it will be mentioned on the tenancy agreement. Alternatively, the number will be on the DEWA number plate near the meter
- Tenancy Agreement
- Copy of passport with the valid visa page or trade license
There will be a fee required for reconnection and a security deposit as well. The security deposit is around Dhs 1000-2000.You will be handed a receipt for claiming the security deposit while leaving the property, so this receipt should be kept safely during your stay in the rented property.
Along with the receipt, you will also be handed a date of when your house will get the connection.

While submitting the online application, you will have to attach the required documents also. After submitting the necessary documents, you will be provided a reference number, which helps to track the status of the application.
Charges for Water & Electricity
DEWA charges a standard rate per unit, currently 20 fils per unit for electricity and 3 fils per unit for water. However, they can increase the rates if you increase your consumption of water / electricity.
Payment of Water & electricity bills
The bills are sent out monthly and must be paid within 14 days.
